A dog by the name of Lucky is still standing even after she was mauled, tortured and left stranded before being found in Patterson Park.
Peggy Lee reports on the dog whose story of survival is inspiring hope.
"She was really sad, she couldn't even stand up," said animal doctor Susan Warner-Jones. "She had a broken foot, she couldn't even put it down."
Lucky was found Tuesday in Patterson Park. She had been left tied to a tree and had visible injuries both old and new.
"We ultimately found out she had three bones broken in [her] foot, she was bitten all over, her ear was torn," said Warner-Jones.
In total, more than 100 bites were found on Lucky.
A sympathetic person passing by saw Lucky tied to the tree in Patterson Park and knew she needed immediate help.
Lucky then went to Eastern Animal Hospital for much-needed treatment.
Doctors at Eastern Animal Hospital believe Lucky was the victim of dog fighting. According to them, dogs like Lucky are sometimes used as 'bait dogs.'
"It's really, really frustrating that it still happens," said Warner-Jones. "Why? Just for sport or for money? Why [is it] people would be doing that?"
For the time being, the doctors say Lucky is making good progress and will hopefully make a full recovery.
"She's doing much better, all of her wounds are clearing up," said Warner-Jones.
Meanwhile, the person who originally found Lucky is looking to find her a permanent owner.
The Eastern Animal Hospital is also taking donations to help pay for her treatment. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
