Four dogs found starving
Ridgewood, NY (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Apr 20, 2007
County: Queens

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Jamel Carter

A 23-year-old Queens man was arrested for allegedly leaving four dogs to starve in the filthy backyard of his Ridgewood home.

Jamel Carter faces three charges of animal cruelty and three charges of abandoning an animal, according to ASPCA Assistant Director Joseph Pentangelo.

In April, the ASPCA received a tip about several dogs in the backyard of 80-50 57th St.

ASPCA Special Agent Paul Lai went to the house and found an adult female dog and three puppies near death. There was no food or water in sight.

He took the dogs, all pit bull mixes, to the ASPCA hospital. The adult dog died. The puppies survived but needed intensive care.

One of the puppies, a female named Mazie by ASPCA staff, was virtually comatose when she came to the hospital, Pentangelo said.

Her body temperature was below 80 degrees and her heart was so weak it was only beating at about 12 times a minute. She weighed only about 10 pounds.

Within a matter of days, her weight had increased by 23%, Pentangelo said. Within 12 days, her weight was up to more than 15 pounds.

Lai arrested Carter on Tuesday as he appeared in Brooklyn court for a hearing on a drug charge. He also has an outstanding warrant on a domestic violence charge.

"Once again we have documentation of the relationship between animal and human abuse," Pentangelo said.

Things are looking up for Mazie and her brothers. They have bounced back and all three are up for adoption at the ASPCA.

Pentangelo urged anyone who suspects animal cruelty to call the ASPCA's anonymous tip line at (877) THE-ASPCA.

"Without somebody having gotten involved, this puppy and probably her siblings would likely have died," he said.
