A 21-year-old man who police said slammed a cat into a wall after a heated argument with his girlfriend is headed for court.

Robert Gonzalez of the 1000 block of Siboney Avenue, was charged with battery and animal cruelty on May 13 after Palm Bay police were called to his home to investigate another, unrelated disturbance, reports show.

He is scheduled to attend a short hearing on the charges at the Brevard County Jail Complex, according to records.

Police initially responded to the home after reports that Gonzalez grabbed his girlfriend and threw her to the ground, causing her shirt to rip.

Police arrived and found out that the pair, who have a one-month-old child, had gotten into another argument the previous day, reports show.

The woman reportedly told police that Gonzalez, a telemarketer, picked up the family cat and threw it into an interior wall of the home, causing life-threatening injuries.

Police tracked Gonzalez down, arrested him and transported him to the Brevard County Jail Complex. The cat's condition was not immediately known.
