Nine dogs in five months have been killed and dumped on a road near the old train depot.
"Everyone of the dogs has had the same feature -- it looks like they've been hit across the head with an aluminum bat," said Animal Control Officer Mark Oakley.
Crews with the city gas department and Henderson Municipal Power and Light began discovering the dogs in October on a road that runs parallel to the old train depot, between Alves and Adams streets.
Oakley said the dogs have been different breeds including poodle mixes, a Labrador mix, a shepherd mix and pit bulls. The dogs found recently have all been pit bulls.
"Five pit bulls have been found within the last 2 1/2 months," he said, adding that a pit bull found last Tuesday bore scars of suspected dog fighting.
Oakley said he believes someone is using the dogs for illegal dog fighting or is simply stealing the dogs and killing them.
"I have found an owner of one of the dogs and he said his dog was stolen out of his yard," Oakley said.
The area where the dogs are being dumped is quite remote, Oakley said, and someone would have to be familiar with it to know that few people travel back there.
"Somebody is killing these dogs and then leaving them out there. There is no doubt in my mind," he said.
Oakley said anyone missing a dog, particularly a pit bull, should contact the Henderson County Humane Society.
He said he has pictures of some of the dogs and that the owners may be able to identify them.
