Dog killed during shootout
Blacklick, OH (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, May 2, 2007
County: Franklin

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

One man was wounded and a dog was killed after gunshots rang out Wednesday night near an apartment complex on the city's far-east side.

Columbus police were called to the complex on Heatherbridge Lane just before midnight, NBC 4's David Wayne reported.

The apartment building is located in Blacklick, just north of Broad Street.

Once at the scene, officers found a dead dog underneath a parked car, and a man with gunshot wounds inside an apartment.

"The officers that arrived first found a small dog that was shot dead, lying dead outside," said Columbus police Sgt. Ken Tischler. "A few minutes later they found someone who had been shot inside (an apartment)."

Dax Darden, 30, was transported to Grant Medical Center for treatment. Officials said he is expected to be OK.

Authorities have not determined who the dog belonged to, or who is responsible for shooting the animal.

According to police, Darden was shot when two armed men forced their way into the apartment he was visiting. The man who lives in the apartment was not injured, Wayne reported.

Police said several guns were taken from the apartment, but so far detectives have no motives and have made no arrests.
