Pit bull puppy's ears cropped with shears
Pahokee, FL (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Mar 20, 2007
County: Palm Beach

Disposition: Alleged
Case Images: 5 files available

Alleged: 16 year old male

Police say a 16-year-old boy, whose name was not released because of his age, performed the ad-hoc surgery on the dog March 20th, and left it on the front porch of the person who bred the dog. He was charged on May 3 with animal cruelty.

A vet who later treated the animal said the surgery would have left the dog in extreme pain and suffering.

Investigators say the teen told them he cut the ears for cosmetic reasons. Some pit bull owners engage in a practice of cropping the dog's ears, a process critics believe is inhumane even if done by medical personnel.

According to police reports, the boy claimed he learned how to cut the puppy's ears on the Internet. After he cut the young dog's ears off in his backyard, police say he left the dog on a neighbor's doorstep.

According to detectives, the teen had agreed to give a puppy from his dog's litter to a woman. When the puppies were born, she picked the same puppy he wanted. Police are unsure whether he cut the dog's ears off to spite the woman, or for cosmetic reasons.

The teen was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center in Palm Beach County. The puppy, which is now 10-12 weeks old, is being cared for in a temporary foster home.
