Horse neglect
Moultrie, GA (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, May 3, 2007
County: Colquitt

Disposition: Not Charged

Abuser names unreleased

Colquitt County sheriff's deputies found several animals that appeared to be malnourished Thursday morning. A possible suspect in the case had previously been investigated for animal abuse by the Georgia Department of Agriculture.

A sheriff's deputy was called to a house on Holmes Drive at 11:03 a.m. about a horse that appeared to be neglected. The deputy found a white horse that was "extremely malnourished," but he was unable to speak with anyone at the house.

A neighbor came up to the deputy while he was at the house and stated there may be other animals at another house on Holmes Drive that were also neglected. A second deputy went to that house and found another horse, two calves, several chickens and several goats that appeared to be malnourished.

The second deputy spoke with the house's owner, who said he had sold the horse to the man who lived at the first house. The deputies contacted the Department of Agriculture, and an investigator came to the second house.

The investigator told the deputies the man had already been under investigation for animal abuse, and he stated there was nothing more he could do Thursday. The deputies took photos of the animals and left the scene.

The report did not say whether the animals were taken from the houses. A sheriff's department spokesman said the state Department of Agriculture would have to address that question.
