A puppy named Lilo had an untreated skin disease so severe, it caused him pain when he was touched. He was so thin his ribs and spine protruded, and he was severely dehydrated.

A second skinny dog named Tita was infested with fleas and chained to a house with no food or water.

Both dogs were seized by Martin County Animal Control officers and ultimately euthanized after a medical evaluation in March.

On May 2 their owner was arrested on charges of animal abandonment and resisting arrest when deputies arrived at his Indiantown home with a warrant.

George Maldonado, 41, of 14777 S.W. 170th Ave., was being held at the Martin County jail in lieu of $5,500 bail.

The animals were in horrible condition and it wasn't in their best interest to keep them alive, said Amy Christensen of the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast.

"Those poor things," she said Thursday. "I hope this is a lesson on animal cruelty. Please, anyone that sees any animal abuse, report it before it gets to this."

Animal control officials previously warned Maldonado about not taking proper care of his animals. When they returned for a follow-up check, they found the dogs tethered to the house with no shelter, food or water.
