A Coralville man faces charges of animal abuse and felony drug possession after police accused him of stomping a bird to death and trying to hide marijuana in bushes on Linn Street on Tuesday.

Christopher Mason, 30, was standing by a building at 13 S. Linn St. at 1:53 a.m. when he kicked a bird to death, "leaving blood and feathers all over the ground as well as his shoes," according to a police complaint dated Tuesday.

Iowa City police said they then saw Mason place a package in some bushes as he tried to walk away from the scene. That package contained several bags of marijuana, police said.

Mason now faces a Class D felony charge of controlled-substance violation and an aggravated misdemeanor charge of animal abuse.

On Tuesday afternoon, Mason was being held in Johnson County Jail on $12,500 cash-only bond.
