39 cats abandoned after tenant evicted
Syracuse, NY (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Apr 25, 2007
County: Onondaga

Disposition: Not Charged

Abuser names unreleased

East Laurel Street resident Roberta Cullen says she's glad to see the cats across from her home gone.

"I'm glad somebody is doing something about it. Because those animals don't need to be abused like that," says Cullen.

Thirty-nine cats were removed from poor conditions Tuesday morning by Animal Cruelty investigators. Neighbors Roberta and Charles Cullen say the animals were confined to one room. And they believe at least two of the cats are theirs.

"We're missing two cats," says Charles Cullen.

Reporter: "Do you think they're over there?"

"They came up missing three months after we moved into our apartment here," he says.

Roberta Cullen says her granddaughter's cat could be one of the caged. She and her husband hope that it is and that it's still alive.

Thirty-nine cats are homeless after a couple is evicted from their home on the north side of Syracuse.

"During the winter, he told me he had dead cats up there and he'd wait for the ground to thaw so he could bury them," says Charles Cullen

Animal Cruelty Investigator Betsy Puffer says the Cullen's can claim their cat if it with those taken from the home.

"We saw a picture of a cat that may belong to somebody else and certainly, if we see something that fits that description, we'll let her know and let her see the cat," Puffer says.

Anyone in the area that has a missing cat can go to the SPCA in Mattydale with proper papers or a picture to claim their cat.
