Beyond the gate at Pam Valence's property in Raceland is a kitty graveyard.

"I buried at least 15 in my yard," she said. "Five died under my house that I couldn't get to. And there are probably that many more that are missing."

Valence had been feeding and sheltering dozens of stray cats.

"I woke up one morning, and this one little cat was actually screaming in pain," she said. "I brought her to the vet, and he tested her and said she had antifreeze poisoning."

"I think that's awful. I think a person that can harm a little creature like this has no conscience and is capable of doing anything," Valence said.

"That's a stepping stone for violence in our community. So, the reason it is important for people who aren't animal advocates -- which is fine -- that kind of behavior will bleed over into human-to-human violence," Kathryn Destreza, of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said.

The Humane Society is offering a $500 reward if you can help find the person who may have poisoned Valence's cats.
