RCMP and SPCA officers are investigating a shocking case of animal cruelty.
Dozens of cattle and bison are dead and dozens more are in terrible condition on a remote section of pastureland about five kilometres west of Cochrane.
More than forty dead animals are stretched out over the area.
Police responded to the pasture after getting an anonymous tip. A veterinarian was called in and determined animals showed signs of starvation.
There is also evidence that the animals have been dying over a period of six months.
The pasture is located on the Stoney First Nations reserve but so far investigators have been unable to determine who is the actual owner of the herd.
Necropsies will be performed to determine the exact cause of death. If neglect is the cause, the owner will face charges.
Under the province's Animal Protection Act, the owner can also be fined up to 20 thousand dollars and be prohibited from ever owning animals again.
Feed has been brought into the area but an investigator with the SPCA says some of the animals may be beyond saving.
Case Updates
| Investigators still do not know who was responsible for the herd of cattle and bison found dead. Forty-one head of cattle and five bison were found dead from starvation on the Stoney Reserve on Tuesday. The Stoney Reserve is home to three bands: Wesley, Chiniki and Bearspaw. The Star Ranch is the name of the property where the cattle and bison were found in various stages of starvation. The ranch is an operation on the reserve carried out by the Bearspaw Band. But there has been no official confirmation that the Bearspaw Band is responsible for the death of the animals. A spokesperson for the Bearspaw Band Council says the band's lawyers have told them not to make any public comment. |
