The Oregon Humane Society is asking for the public's help in identifying the person who left a female cat and her newborn kittens in a plastic bin on the agency's doorstep.

The small storage container wrapped in duct tape was abandoned at OHS Wednesday night with five kittens and their mother inside. It appears that the 2-month-old kittens and their young mother were left inside a sealed bin without air holes for 10 hours. All of the felines miraculously survived.

"These animals could easily have suffocated," said OHS Humane Investigator Kerri Tyler. "We want everyone to know that this is reckless behavior that endangers the lives of animals."

Animal abandonment is a misdemeanor which can result in fines and jail time. A person commits the crime of animal abandonment if he or she intentionally leaves a domestic animal at a location without providing for the animal's continued care.

"If you have a cat and cannot care for it, please call OHS so we help find your cat a new home. The worst thing to do is abandon the cat in the middle of the night," said Susan Mentley, OHS Operations Director.

Anyone who recognizes the cats or has information about the abandonment is urged to call OHS at (503) 285-7722, ext. 214.
