A teenage girl studying to be a veterinary technician faces animal abuse charges after police say she gave fatal doses of antifreeze to pets belonging to the daughter of her 60-year-old boyfriend.
Brandi L. Charvat, 17, of St. Charles is accused of killing a cat and dog after her boyfriend's family opposed their relationship, police said.
"I didn't know the antifreeze would kill the cat, just make it sick," Charvat said in a state police report, according to The Saginaw News. The report said she also fed antifreeze to a chocolate Labrador retriever.
Charvat, enrolled at Baker College in Owosso, was arraigned Tuesday and faces two counts of torturing and killing an animal. She is free on a $7,500 bond.
"I've never heard of anyone being charged with a felony because a cat died," said Charvat's mother, Laurie Charvat. "She's always loved animals."
Police said growing tension had developed between Charvat and her boyfriend's adult children.
"She thinks she's madly in love with the guy," the mother said. "No (60-year-old) man has got any business fooling around with a 17-year-old kid."
Charvat is scheduled to appear Wednesday in Saginaw County District Court. If convicted, she faces up to four years in prison and a $5,000 fine. References« MI State Animal Cruelty Map
