more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

A Trenton woman faces an animal cruelty charge – and her dog needs a new home, authorities say, after the dog was found with a cable embedded one and a half inches into her neck Friday.

"This dog has now been saved and we're going to find it a good home," said Leland Gordon, executive director of the Animal Friends Humane Society.

The 11-month-old black Labrador retriever with a sweet disposition – renamed "Hope" – is being offered for adoption after she underwent emergency surgery to remove the cable from her neck, Gordon said.

The animal apparently was left constantly tied up outside, Gordon said.

"This is what happens when people tie out or chain their dogs outside 24 hours a day and spend little time with them," he said. The dog did not even have a collar, Gordon said.

The owner, Lauren Spencer of Trenton, has been charged with animal cruelty and failure to have a dog license.

Shelter officials advise anyone who suspects animal cruelty to immediately report it to authorities. Spencer relinquished her ownership of the dog.

Anyone interested in adopting the animal may call the Humane Society at 513-867-5727.

Case Updates

A woman whose dog was found with a chain embedded in its neck was convicted Friday on animal cruelty charges. A judge found Lauren Spencer guilty of animal cruelty and having unlicensed dogs, after she admitted she left her dog tied up while she worked.

"I just wanted to keep her from getting hit by a car," Spencer told the judge.

The black Labrador retriever had been tied up with a cable, which an animal welfare activist said was thin and had become tangled around the dog?s neck and embedded an inch deep.

"Just you imagine having that around your neck and that's how that dog felt," said Leland Gordon of the Animal Friends Humane Society.

Spencer faces up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine when she is sentenced next week.

The dog has been placed with another family, Gordon said.
