Members of various region animal rescue groups are clamoring for action at an apparently abandoned Gary home where several dogs were left behind, some already dead.
Lt. Samuel Roberts, of the Gary Police Department's animal control office, stood this morning outside the home at 6309 E. 3rd Ave. but said there was little he could yet legally do to enter the home and help surviving animals still inside the house.
Roberts said he saw a lot of animal feces through a window and that it smelled bad. On April 3, animal control arrived and took two adult animals away that were sitting on the front porch.
Roberts said officers placed food for at least two adult dogs still inside the through an opening in a window and placed a notice on the house for owners to contact animal control. He said officers would return to the home Friday to check on the dogs. But he said there is nothing else his officers can legally do at this time.
Animal rescue worker Denise Gates, of I Wanna Go Home Rescue in Dyer, said she saw a dead dog in the front yard of property and took a picture of it Monday. Animal control removed the carcass Tuesday morning.
Neighbors have said the occupants of the home moved out last week, leaving behind several dogs to fend for themselves.
A nearby resident, Pauline Brown, said she called Gary animal control Saturday about the issue. She said she brought a bag of dog food to the home and that two adult dogs and three puppies came out of a window opening where an air conditioning unit had been.
Brown said she took one puppy home and two others to the Humane Society in Miller.
A neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said he was told by a person who lived at the residence in question early last week that the occupants were moving out and that the neighbor should take some cages in the back yard and corral the dogs.
The neighbor said he went to the back yard and saw a dead dog partially buried in a sand pit.
Volunteers and officials from the Miller Humane Society, Calumet Area Humane Society, I Wanna Go Home Rescue and CPR Dog Rescue, of Crown Point, all were on scene outside of the residence this morning attempting to decide how to help the remaining animals at the property.
