Several pit bulls were quarantined Friday night after officers seized them from a house off Nations Ford Road in southwest Charlotte.

Police obtained a search warrant after a neighbor complained dogfighting went on in the owner's backyard. Animal control officers served the warrant Thursday night even though the owner wasn't home. They seized four pit bulls and all had injuries consistent with dogfighting.

A neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous told Eyewitness News, "I was afraid for myself even going out to my car; I was really afraid." She said she's seen dogs fighting several times before, saying, "If the other dogs didn't perform, then the owner would actually hit the dog with the belt. I actually saw animal cruelty over there."

In addition to the dogs animal control officers seized, the search warrant also said they found skeletal remains of two dogs in a trash can behind the home. The owner's neighbor was just glad police took action before someone got hurt. She said, "I feared they would have attacked the kids that were there. There were two little children there and I feared for the kids. "

Police have not said whether the dogs will be returned to the owner. The owner of the dogs had not been charged yet but police say the investigation continues.
