A Lompoc man was arrested Friday after he allegedly shot a dog because it was barking, police said. The dog was treated at a veterinary hospital for the wound, which was not considered life-threatening, police said.
Frank Lakatos, 68, was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty and shooting a weapon within city limits, according to police. His bail was set at $20,000.
Leland Montgomery, the owner of the 2-year-old Queensland Heeler named Sky, called police shortly after noon to report the shooting in the 400 block of South H Street, according to a police report.
After investigating the incident and serving a warrant service, police said Lakatos admitted shooting the dog. He was arrested and a .22-caliber rifle was seized.
In the same neighborhood in September, a half-poodle, half miniature doberman pinscher was shot in the head and killed after a confrontation between Lakatos and that dog's owner, Tracie Henry. Lakatos denied shooting the dog and was not charged by police, Henry said Saturday.
Montgomery said residents in the neighborhood are afraid for children in the 400 block of South H Street. It could have been a child crying. The neighbors are scared to death around here. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
