A man suspected of running a dog fighting operation is on the run. Ingham County Animal Control says they found nearly twenty pit bulls in his Lansing home on Nov 9. The pit bulls have to be kept in separate cages at the Ingham County Animal Shelter. Animal control officers believe they were part of a dog fighting operation.
Dep. John Good, Animal Control Officer: "The individuals that we spoke with there indicated that not to put them together because they would be aggressive towards each other."
Now they're searching for the Lansing man who owned the dogs. Investigators say the man fought and possibly even bred the dogs. Neighbors say oftentimes they were chained to doghouses in the backyard.
Elvert Suttles, neighbor: "There are some big ones, some small, all different colors, there was a lot of them."
Deputy John Good: "You could pull a truck with the size of the chains these dogs were on."
And in all, 18 dogs were pulled from the home that afternoon, including a puppy that was already dead. Others showed signs of abuse and neglect.
Dep John Good: "Some were thin, you could see backbones."
Those dogs are being treated by a veterinarian, but the fate of the dogs remains to be seen.
