A tip lead authorities in the north Valley to a cockfighting operation involving dozens of birds. Sheriff's deputies made the discovery inside an almond orchard in Madera county.

Several of the people believed to be involved in the cockfight fled as authorities arrived, but investigators detained two men.

Thirty roosters were left behind; 15 dead and 15 still alive, but all maimed from cockfighting.

All of the birds were handed over to animal control officers.
