Someone drowned three puppies recently and the Nova Scotia SPCA wants to punish whoever is responsible.
Peggys Cove resident Roger Crooks was strolling along the shoreline near the Swissair Flight 111 Memorial last week when he stumbled upon a bag containing the dead animals.
"It looked kind of unusual," Mr. Crooks recalled Wednesday night. "So I just took a little closer look and seen that it was three . . . little dogs."
"It was not a very pleasant scene, really," he said.
Mr. Crooks contacted the Nova Scotia SCPA on Friday to alert them about his disturbing discovery.
Judith Gass, spokeswoman for the non-profit group, said the bag had been weighed down by a water pump, most likely from a V6 Chevrolet engine.
"It's gruesome," Ms. Gass said Wednesday evening. "I have the feeling that they were like eight-week-old puppies . . . (they) looked like puppies that would be up running around."
Although she couldn't pinpoint the breed, Ms. Gass said they were probably littermates. "Two were blond and one is a brown one," she said. "They're the same size."
She said although newborn kittens were sometimes drowned decades ago, the practice is unacceptable and cruel.
"Over time we've become educated," she said. "Things have changed over the years. What kind of a person would do that to an animal?"
Ms. Gass if the organization finds out who committed the crime, animal cruelty charges will be laid.
"I want persons out there who might do this to know that it's illegal . . . and that the public won't stand for this anymore," Ms. Gass said.
Mr. Crooks also hopes letting the public know about the poor puppies he found will raise awareness about the horrific manner in which some animals are treated.
"Hopefully there will be a stronger message out there to prevent some of these cruel acts," he said.
