Neglected dog found in dumpster
Malden, MA (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Apr 3, 2007
County: Middlesex

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A tiny chihuahua is now in the right hands after a motel employee found him thrown away in the motel's trash dumpster.

Animal Control Officer Kevin Alkins said "we've been able to dry him off and warm him up a little bit. He's an adorable little guy, pretty friendly, but clinging to me for life."

But you can see in his eyes just how much he's been through.

Alkins said "There's no need to leave an animal for dead in a dumpster."

Animal control officers searched through the dumpster where an employee at Malden's Town Line Inn discovered the dog.

Alan Borgal of the Animal Rescue League says "he was almost three feet under there, trapped."

The motel employee heard him struggling just in time.

"This dog wouldn't have survived a big truck picking him up and being squished," said Borgal.

The little guy wasn't about to give up easily when he was stuffed inside his carrier deep underneath the trash he actually tried to chew his way out.

Almost too wobbly to walk, ribs showing, the chihuahua got some TLC and some much-needed medical attention.

"He's a little bit dehydrated and definitely malnourished. So he's certainly suffered from neglect, but he's not unstable. We'll definitely be able to take care of him at our facility," said veterinarian Dr. Martha Smith.

From his little t-shirt to painted toenails, clearly this was someone's pet.

Now, he's being taken to the MSPCA shelter while police hope to take in whoever is responsible for this case of animal cruelty.

Dr. Smith said "He definitely has a will to survive. He's a fighter. So we'll have to give him a name like Rocky or something."
