On December 14, 2006, officers were dispatched to a call of a dead dog hanging from a fence by its collar. The fence separated the local post office from an adjacent property, and the dog was in plain view. The dog was described as an adult male beagle. According to authorities, it appeared that the dog, tethered to a nearby tree, had climbed onto his dog house, jumped over the fence in an attempt to escape, and hung himself.

Officers reportedly identified the dog's owner as Sean Kelly Swanson, 39, of Hydesville. The man had apparently been staying on property in a small trailer, but had not been seen or heard from in more than a month.
