Police said it was likely a couple would face charges after a cleaning crew found a dead dog inside a home.

The dog was found inside a Lexington Avenue home on the city's northeast side.

The home's landlord evicted the renters earlier this week. Police said the renters did not take their dogs when they packed up.

The cleaning crew found two dogs inside the same cage. One of the animals died, policed said.

"I don't have any explanation as to why (the renters) would have done that or allowed the dog to deteriorate like that," said Corp. Joe Rock of Franklin County Animal Control.

Investigators were working to determine how long the dog had been dead.
