Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

Police and animal control officers in Virginia Beach were alerted to a dogfight in progress on March 23, and arrived in time to see the fight going on.

A complaint came into dispatch shortly after 2 p.m. and officers responded to Beautiful St. in the Seatackarea of the city, and found two dogs engaging in a staged fight. One of the dog's owners immediately ran, leaving his dog behind, and is still being sought.

The second dog's owner tried to flee with his dog, but was stopped by an Animal Control officer down the street.

According to police, both dogs suffered from multiple puncture wounds to the face and forelegs. One of the pit bulls was treated at a local veterinary hospital for internal bleeding. Police suspect the injury to have been caused by blunt force trauma from a kick.

Both dogs were seized and impounded for dog fighting and are being held in the custody of Animal Control.

The dogs' owners have not yet been charged, but charges are expected to be filed.

Case Updates

A search warrant by Virginia Beach animal control officers and police for a home where dog fighting allegedly occurred didn't turn up any dog fighting materials, police said. But they took a pit bull from the home on Beautiful Street during the search.

Police were called to the home earlier in the week after two dogs were caught fighting in the yard. Both dogs were taken away and both had bite marks from the fight, authorities noted.

Police are still trying to find 29-year-old Sherman Macer and 19-year-old Derek Johnson on charges of organized dog fighting.
