One man was arrested and more than 200 roosters were euthanized on March 24 as police broke up a cockfighting ring, Riverside police said.

Police responded to 6000 block of Stover Avenue when a resident reported a cockfighting ring in the back yard of a home near the La Sierra Hills area, Riverside police Sgt. Dan Hoxmeier said.

Officers interrupted a cockfight in front of nine spectators in a back yard arena, Hoxmeier said.

Police found about 20 dead roosters that are believed to have died from injuries suffered during cockfights, Hoxmeier said.

More than 200 fighting roosters being raised on the property were euthanized by animal control officials before they were removed from the property, Hoxmeier said. Police found several blades and "slashers" used to equip the birds' claws.

Police arrested the property owner, Alex Cardenas, 39, on suspicion of cruelty to animals, possession of implements used in cockfighting and possession of cocks for fighting. He was booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center.

Nine people were cited at the scene for being present during a cockfighting event and released, he said.
