Puppy mill - 102 dogs seized
Rosebud, AB (CA)

Incident Date: Thursday, Mar 15, 2007

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: man

More than 100 dogs, including some in distress, have been removed from what the RCMP believes is a large-scale breeding operation in southern Alberta.

Police say they found the dogs early March 15 while checking a residence for a firearm near the community of Rosebud, about 80 kilometres northeast of Calgary.

A total of 102 animals were found on the property, including the main residence and a number of outbuildings.

Mounties say they also seized a loaded .22-calibre rifle, ammunition and some marijuana.

The dogs are being cared for by the Strathmore Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Calgary Humane Society.

A 43-year-old man is facing several firearms charges and will appear in a Drumheller courtroom on April 13.

Police say it's possible that more charges may be laid in connection with the keeping of dogs.
