Michael Mohler, 30, of Port Republic, VA was sentenced on misdemeanor cruelty to animals for what a prosecutor called "one of the most egregious animal (neglect) cases I've seen."

Mohler received a 180-day sentence, 120 days suspended, and was ordered to pay a $750 fine and $275 in restitution for the dog's surgery, and spend one year on probation.

Mohler contended he tried to remove the chain from the dog but she snapped at him. The Siberian Husky had been chained so long the animal's flesh had grown over the chain. The animal was euthanized.
