The Marin County Sheriff's Department is investigating the shooting deaths of three animals in west Marin County in the past month.

Sally Gale, wife of Marin Farm Bureau incoming president Mike Gale, said a mother cow was shot on March 19 in Chileno Valley and two 400-pound calves were shot on Feb. 16 on Marshall-Petaluma Road.

A 9mm shell casing was found at the site of one of the shootings on Feb. 16, Gale said. A witness to the March 19 shooting that happened between 4 p.m. and 4:40 p.m. heard five shots and saw several high school-age students laughing and hollering and leaving in a light-colored car, Gale said.

Gale and her husband own the Chileno Valley Ranch.

Case Updates

In January, three deer were found shot to death in a rural meadow near the border of Marin and Sonoma counties. In February, two mortally wounded calves were found on a ranch nearby. And in March, a 1,300-pound Angus cow shot three times had to be euthanized.

The apparently random shootings have alarmed animal welfare advocates, who announced a $15,000 reward this week for information leading to the arrest of the shooter.

"We are extremely concerned because of the nature of these shootings and the viciousness," said Cindy Machado, the animal services director for the Marin Humane Society. "These are calculated, random acts of violence that are extremely concerning and dangerous. Animals are not a target range."

Marin County Sheriff's investigators are searching for a white sedan that was spotted near the Goldbeck Ranch, on Chileno Valley Road, where the angus cow was shot on March 19. Anyone with information can call the Marin Humane Society at 415-506-6209 or 415-883-4621. cq

The Marin Humane Society is offering $5,000 in reward money for the person or persons responsible for shooting and killing cows and deer on some of the back roads in the county.

Ranchers said that three cows have been shot and killed in the past few weeks. Three deer have also been found shot dead.

One rancher who said he witnessed a shooting earlier this week said he saw someone inside a light-colored sedan pull up to a fence line along Chileno Valley Road and shoot a cow standing by the fence. There were three or four young men in the vehicle, the rancher said.

The cow was injured and suffering and eventually killed to be put out of its misery, the rancher said.

Cruelty to animals is a felony and if convicted, a person could face a maximum of three years in state prison and a fine of up to $20,000.

The Marin County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incidents.
