Children, animals sexually abused Valleyview, AB (CA)Incident Date: Wednesday, Mar 21, 2007
Disposition: Convicted
Defendant/Suspect: Gary Wayne Todd
Case Updates: 2 update(s) available
A Valleyview-area man has been charged in connection with allegations of child porn and sex involving animals.
Mounties were tipped off to the stash of alarming video tapes, DVDs and photos in an area home early March 21.
"It did not involve the Internet," said Staff Sgt. Frank Smart.
He wouldn't say who tipped off cops.
Police arrested a 53-year-old man, who lived at the rural residence with his adult son.
Mounties said their investigation hadn't yet revealed any victims in Valleyview or the area. "There's lots of material we still have to review," said Smart. "There may be more (charges). There may not be more."
He wouldn't say whether there was more than one child involved, nor whether any child had been identified by police.
As for the bestiality charge, Smart declined to say what kind of animal was involved, other than to say, "There was no livestock that we observed."
The animal in question had been earlier given away, said Smart, and Mounties were considering telling the current owner the animal was the focus of a bestiality investigation.
Smart said other animals on the property were checked on. "We did involve the appropriate agencies to make sure the animals were OK."
There was nothing found during the investigation to suggest the illegal material was being sold, said Smart.
Garry Wayne Todd was charged with one count of possession of child pornography and one count of bestiality.
He remains in custody and is set to appear in Valleyview Provincial Court April 5.
Case UpdatesGarry Wayne Todd is not beyond hope and shouldn’t be locked up indefinitely, his lawyer argued Tuesday.
Defence counsel Mark Gottlieb said Todd, who in the past has been resistant to treatment, is now willing to take the intensive counselling which would make him safe to return to the community.
“That hasn’t happened here,” Gottlieb said, of the high intensity sex-offender treatment program Todd hasn’t been through.
“Mr. Todd does deserve the opportunity to be able to go through such a program and show that he is able to complete it successfully,” Gottlieb told provincial court Judge Marlene Graham.
Crown prosecutors Jenny Rees and Diane Hollinshead are seeking to have Todd, 55, declared a dangerous offender and locked up indefinitely.
The convicted pedophile has a history of abusing children and they fear he will strike again.
Todd pleaded guilty in May, 2008, to charges of producing child pornography, sexual assault and bestiality involving separate incidents in Calgary and Valleyview, Alta.
Todd, who was sentenced in 1986 and 1989 for sexually assaulting two young children, admitted molesting the daughter of friends of his in Calgary between 1990 and 1992.
The sexual assault investigation was ongoing in Calgary when Todd came to the attention of Valleyview RCMP in March, 2007.
Responding to a complaint by Todd’s son, police executed a search warrant on his home, where they found drawings and writings depicting sexual activity with children.
Gottlieb said a sentence which would keep Todd behind bars another five years would be sufficient punishment.

The Crown is looking at having a former city man declared a long-term offender or dangerous offender after he admitted to sexually abusing an eight-year-old girl, bestiality and possessing child pornography.
Gary Wayne Todd, 53, who entered the courtroom in a wheelchair, pleaded guilty through defence lawyer Mark Gottlieb on Monday to charges relating to all three sets of allegations.
A video of the man having sex with a female dog was found along with child pornography in his home in Valleyview last year after the sexual touching was reported to police.
Crown prosecutor Diane Hollinshead said the sexual assault occurred in Calgary, but the video and about 600 stories and images of very young children were found in the man's home in Valleyview.
"They depict or advocate sex or sexual activity with young children," Hollinshead told provincial court Judge Marlene Graham.
Most of the pornographic images, said the prosecutor, were traced or hand-drawn by Todd.
Hollinshead said outside court the bestiality charge is rare, although she has one other such case currently in her files.
The lawyers said a detailed agreed statement of facts would be read in court when Todd is back on May 23. | Source: Calgary Herald - May 14, 2008 Update posted on May 18, 2008 - 11:52PM |
