Norman police arrested a local man on March 18 after he reportedly shot and killed a neighbor's dog.

Authorities say the incident occurred on the 8000 block of Post Oak Road in southeast Norman.

Captain Leonard Judy, with the Norman Police Department, says, "The owner of the dog and another man apparently heard a shot followed by the man's dog crying out. They saw the neighbor across the way holding what they believe to be a .22 rifle."

The suspect is 28-year-old Mark Abma. He's now been charged with one felony county of cruelty to animals.

Judy says, "According to the report, the man told the owner of the dog he was concerned the dog might potentially present a threat to his livestock."

We did talk with one resident in the area who described the community as peaceful. Duane Blanton has lived in that rural part of Norman for more than 30 years.

Blanton says, "It's relatively quiet out here and I'm surprised to hear about this."

Blanton has more than a handful of dogs on his property.

As you can image, he also has strong opinions about the situation.

"If a dog was endangering my goats I would shoot it in a minute. I wouldn't hesitate," says Blanton.

But Blanton makes clear he would only shoot if a dog was attacking or vicious.

Blanton says, "If it was just out there barking then that's no big deal."

Whose property was the dog on? It's a question police can't answer right now.

Police also say the suspect threatened to shoot the dog's owner.
