A Phoenix man could face criminal charges after an investigator from the Arizona Humane Society discovered his 10-year old dog soaked in urine and feces and with overgrown hair, said Angela Stringfellow, an information officer for the Humane Society.

The dog, named Porkchop, was so filthy that an Emergency Animal Medical Technician was unable to check his pulse, temperature, or heart rate because of encrusted feces and excess fur, Stringfellow said.

Porkchop was taken to the Humane Society's Second Change Hospital, where three pounds of hair had to be shaven off the dog in order to properly examine him. The dog, found in his back yard near 35th and Dunlap avenues, was unable to walk because his toenails had been grown to more then two inches long.

Stringfellow said a veterinarian found urine scalding in his abdominal area, which had caused bleeding and an infection.

The dog is in protective custody of the Humane Society and awaiting further medical treatment. There is a possibility that the dog has a pancreatic disease.

Stringfellow said that possible charges against his owner are pending, and points to Arizona law 13-2910, which prohibits knowingly or recklessly subjecting any animal to cruel neglect.
