Puppy mill/Hoarding 167 dogs
Chatsworth, GA (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Feb 27, 2003
County: Murray

Disposition: Alleged
Case Images: 1 files available

Alleged: Jean Wilson

Jean Wilson loves her dogs, little Pekingeses, pugs and bichon friss. All 164 of them.

"I'm so devoted to my dogs, they're like my children," said Wilson, who lives in Chatsworth in North Georgia, near the Tennessee line. "They're my life."

Or they were until Feb. 27, when the Georgia Department of Agriculture seized the dogs and three cats from Wilson's trash-littered, foul-smelling home. Inspectors with the state department had been monitoring Wilson since 1999 because her animals were usually kept in unsanitary, crowded conditions, according to state inspection reports.

Wilson said she is a dog breeder and sells dogs to help supplement her $665 a month disability income. But she said she hadn't been able to sell many dogs over the past year because of her poor health and the high cost of ads. Wilson said she always took good care of the dogs.

He said because most of Wilson's dogs weren't sick or dying, her case wasn't as severe as many they see. Murray County Animal Control Director Gary Cowart said the dogs had food and water, although they were matted and living in crowded, dirty conditions. A few had heartworms and eye or other injuries.

Cowart said they took the three cats and about 30 of the dogs but had to euthanize two because of illness. The remaining dogs went to the Atlanta Humane Society, which already has placed most of them and is treating several ill ones.

"She apparently tried to keep them up as best she could. Overall, she gave these dogs as much love as she possibly could," Cowart said.
