Eighty cats were removed from a northeast Clayton County mobile home. Clayton County police say they are investigating the case. Early this month, they said any charges -- if lodged -- would emerge from an investigation by county code officials, who work separately from the police.
Later, police said they are considering criminal charges. The man who rents the mobile home, Larry Shaf, 47, still lives there, according to the county Community Development Department. He could not be reached this week for comment.
The cats had virtually destroyed the home's interior, he said. "They just used his carpet for a cat box, till it was soaked," Goodman said. The odor was almost overwhelming. Masks are available for this kind of operation, but the officers didn't use them. "We just raised a few windows," Goodman said. Case UpdatesA veterinarian whose testimony helped convict a man of 29 counts of animal neglect said Saturday she hopes he gets psychological help.
In 2003, about 80 cats were removed from a Stockbridge mobile home belonging to Larry Schaff, 47. Another 18 were removed in a raid in July of this year.
Dr. Melinda Merck of Cat Clinic of Roswell took in 33 of the cats and testified at Schaff's trial.
He was sentenced last week to 90 days in jail in one of the first successful animal hoarding prosecutions in Georgia. During his four-year probation period, he is not allowed to be in "the presence of" or have custody of any animals. | Source: WSBTV - Oct 17, 2004 Update posted on Oct 19, 2004 - 6:32AM |
