Angel Remigo Villarreal, 23, of Atwater, was booked on suspicion of maiming, mutilating, torturing, wounding, or killing an animal, causing needless suffering to an animal and for giving false information to a peace officer. He remains in custody in lieu of $10,750 bail.

Sheriff's Deputy Justin Ussery said the arrests were made at approximately 9:30 p.m.March 19, 2003when he was sent to the La Chikito Banano tavern, located at 6923 Winton Way, to investigate a report of dogs barking inside a bar.

The deputy, in his report, wrote that when he arrived at the scene there was one light on and no cars around. Ussery said he could hear scuffling and a dog barking inside the building. With the arrival of backup that included a California Highway Patrol officer, the deputies pounded on the doors of the bar but received no answer.

Ussery and Detective Jeff Coburn, checking the rear of the building reported finding two brown and white pit bulls getting out under the fence. The dogs were bleeding from the face and neck area and appeared to have injuries consistent with dog fighting, Ussery wrote in his report.

Receiving no response from inside the bar, the deputies forced their way in and found an individual identified as Jesse Saucedo hiding in the bathroom.

Two individuals, who gave deputies a wrong name, were later identified as Jorge Saucedo and Villarreal. The three suspects were arrested on the animal cruelty charges when deputies found blood on the floor of the business.
