Animal control officers have arrested a 63-year-old Murrieta man on suspicion of animal cruelty.
Authorities with Animal Friends of the Valleys, which provides animal control services to the city, arrested Gary Gwinn on March 2 after finding an injured Australian shepherd on his property on Jefferson Avenue, according to a news release from the organization.
According to jail records, he was booked March 2 on suspicion of cruelty to animals. He was released on $5,000 bail the next day.
According to the release, Gwinn's dog had been hit by a golf cart four days earlier and officers found it lying in a kennel. A veterinarian determined that the dog's spine had been broken away from its pelvis and the dog was euthanized, the release states.
Pet owners are required by state law to seek medical care for animals that are ill or injured, according the release.
No charges have been filed, but Animal Friends officials say they are urging the district attorney's office to prosecute Gwinn. References« CA State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Riverside County, CA
