An Ohio man was arrested March 8 and remained lodged at the Steuben County Jail on March 9 after being charged with various counts stemming from the discovery of dead animals on property he owns in Angola.

A release from Steuben County Sheriffs Department Detective Shari Heffner said Robert A. Jones, 47, of Edon, Ohio was taken into custody at the Hamilton Police Department and charged with five felony counts of failure to dispose of animals and three misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.

The property where the animals were found is located in the 2300 block of East U.S. 20. Complaints about animals on the property not being taken care of were received by the Steuben County Humane Shelter, Heffner said. Officials from the shelter contacted police about the matter on Feb. 27.

An investigation by officials from the shelter and the sheriffs department turned up numerous dead goats, sheep, chickens and geese as well as two dead calves, Heffner said. A few live animals were also discovered on the property.

Officials from the State Board of Animal Health were called in, and officials from that organization determined the animals on the Jones property had died of starvation.

Two families offered to take the live animals and care for them, Heffner said.

Jones bond has been set at $10,000. He must come up with that amount in cash or employ the services of a bail bondsman to be released, a representative from the Steuben County Jail said this morning.
