Authorities found a dog with a metal chain embedded in her neck and have charged its owner with animal cruelty.

The dog, a shepherd mix, was tied up at a house in the 400 block of 60th Avenue East. The dog's owner, Katajanay L. Spears, 31, was arrested March 2 on an animal cruelty charge.

Police said the dog's steel choker was embedded in its neck. The dog, according to Manatee County sheriff's reports, also did not have adequate shelter.

Authorities took the dog, which required surgery to remove the collar.
