Officers with the Pickens County Sheriffs Office and the Reform Police Department arrested 33 people after raiding a cockfight on Feb 25 evening.

Officers received a tip that a cockfight was going on at the home of Robby Glasgow and his wife, Sandra Dale, at 694 Zion Rd. in Pickens County northeast of Gordo. The two were among those arrested and charged with cockfighting, promoting gambling and illegal possession of alcohol, said Pickens County Sheriff David Abston.

Officers discovered a fight going on in a wooden outdoor pit and at least 11 dead roosters. Numerous live roosters were also found at the house, with the number of live roosters possibly in the hundreds, Abston said.

All but about five of those arrested were released by Tuesday morning on $3,000 bail.

Abston said about 50 people were present at the cockfight, and some ran into the woods when officers arrived. Some of those who ran were arrested later when they tried to hitch rides on the road.

We arrested everyone we could get hold of, Abston said. He said alcohol was everywhere, in every vehicle, there was beer, whiskey. He said almost everyone at the fight was also armed.

Officers first received reports about the cockfights six months ago, and received a tip on Feb 25 night that a large crowd was gathering for a fight.

Wed heard reports that this happened periodically, that people would all come together at this one place, Abston said. Those in attendance came from all over West Alabama and east Mississippi, he said.

Additional charges could also be filed. Abston said the gambling, cockfighting and illegal possession of alcohol charges are all misdemeanors. The penalty for cockfighting in Alabama is a fine of between $20 to $50. Promoting gambling carries a maximum punishment of one year in prison or $1,000 fine. Possession of alcohol carries a fine of between $100 and $1,000.

Were looking at coming back and charging them with cruelty to animals, said Abston, adding that he is talking with the district attorney about additional charges.

Gamblings a real part of this, and were very concerned about cockfights as a place with potential for violence, he said. He noted that a previous warrant had been issued for Glasgow and Dale for an assault two weeks ago at another cockfight.

Cruelty to animals is a misdemeanor carrying a maximum punishment of six months in prison or a $3,000 fine.

Case Updates

On August 24, A judge found 19 people guilty of cockfighting in Pickens County.

District Judge William O. Kirk also found the 19 guilty of simple gambling and possession of alcohol in a dry county, all misdemeanors.

The attorney for all the defendants appealed the judges decision and has asked for a trial in Circuit Court, said Pickens County District Attorney Chris McCool.

It sends a clear message that this sort of thing shouldnt be tolerated. Its extremely cruel to the animals," he said.

The charges stem from a raid earlier this year at a residence northeast of Gordo in Pickens County.

Thirty-two people were arrested on February 28 after receiving a tip that a cockfight was under way at the home of Robby Glasgow and his wife, Sandra Dale Glasgow, at 694 Zion Road.

Pickens County Sheriffs deputies and Reform Police officers discovered the fight going on in a wooden outdoor pit. There were at least 11 dead roosters and hundreds of live roosters at the site, Sheriff David Abston said at the time.

Ten of the 32 people pleaded guilty in May.

The cases heard Friday were consolidated. Kirk sentenced each person to three months in jail and ordered each to pay a $500 fine on the gambling and alcohol possession charges and the maximum $50 fine for cockfighting.

The sentences will be served concurrently, so each person was sentenced to three months and fined $1,050.

The charges of illegal possession of alcohol and the fine for cockfighting were dropped for those who pleaded guilty in May. Instead of three months in jail for simple gambling, they were given one year of probation and ordered to pay a $100 fine.

Tom Ward, a Jasper attorney who represented 28 of the people arrested and all 19 in court Friday, said in May that his clients were innocent.

People were there for different reasons," he said. There was a cookout, and some of my clients were unaware there would be a cockfight."

Assistant district attorneys Cynthia Bockman and Andrew Hamlin prosecuted the cases. The remaining three defendants cases will be heard in court on September 6, 2007.

Those found guilty Friday include: Garcia Algaguelio, Ronnie Crawford, Paul Earnest, Brandon David Glasgow, Joshua Glasgow, Robby Glasgow, Sandra Dale Glasgow, Robert Harper, Randall Hamilton, William Higdon Sr., William Higdon Jr., Nickie Nicole Hudson, Bradley Lovett, Israel Martinez Lugo, James Miller, Stillman Lamar Pate, Quincy Prude, Ricardo Segura and Debra Stokes.

The cases of Justin Jones, Lucas Lunsford and Kenneth Renfroe will be heard in September.
