A man charged with 23 counts of neglect and cruelty to horses has pleaded not guilty in Kearney County Court.

Sheriffs officials cited Jim Myrick of Lowell for neglect in January 2007 and have since relocated the horses to Minden as evidence.

Horse rescuer Valerie Hinderlider said many of the horses have suffered starvation and problems with their hooves. Each of the 23 counts carry up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Myrick has retained his right to a jury trial. His next hearing is set for March 22.

Case Updates

A Minden man facing more than 23 years behind bars for animal neglect will serve just 3 months in jail. 59 year old Jim Myrick was sentenced Monday in Kearney County Court.

A judged ordered him to serve 90 days in jail and 2 years probation.

He will also have to do 200 hours of community service.

Myrick was found guilty this summer of 23 counts of animal neglect for having malnourished horses.

Each count carried a maximum 1 year in prison.

He was also found guilty of improper disposal of a dead animal.

That charge carried a maximum of six months in prison.

Kearney County also wants Myrick to reimburse the county $41,000 for taking care of the horses.

A judge will rule on that later this month.
