A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest in an animal-abuse case in Phoenix.

A 2 and a half year old male cat died after it was found with rubber bands tightly bound around his genitals near 32nd Street and Greenway Road. The bands caused an infection, and the cat had to be put down after it suffered from severe shock that led to kidney failure.

The Arizona Humane Society and Silent Witness are offering the reward.

Officials with the Humane Society, which has responded to more than 300 animal cruelty cases so far this year, said they believe someone did this thinking it was a "prank."

"He suffered terribly before we rescued him," said Angela Stringfellow, public information officer for the Humane Society.

The abuse probably happened in early February. The cat was likely very social because an unfriendly cat would not allow a person that close, officials added.

The Humane Society receives eight calls a day for cases ranging from neglect, abandonment and outward cruelty. Officials said the last two months have been "slow" and expect the number to "skyrocket" in the summer.
