Deputies cited four Kern County men for cruelty to animals: Luis Altamirano, 59, Luis M. Altamirano, 36, Pablo Abasolo Gonzalez, 36, and Onesimo Yanez Flores, 42.

Tulare County Sheriff's deputies broke up a cock fight in Ducor at 11:15 a.m. Feb 18 that left about 75 roosters dead, a report said. Deputies responded to the area off Avenue 24, east of Highway 65 south of Porterville, where the deputies witnessed several vehicles fleeing the area.

In cockfighting, two roosters - each with a blade strapped to one leg - battle in an enclosed area while spectators place bets on the outcome.

Cockfighting is illegal in California, and the charge of animal cruelty carries a penalty of up to a year imprisonment and a fine up to $20,000.
