A Haughton man faces charges of cruelty to animals after Bossier Sheriffs Deputies responded to a loose livestock call and found four dead cows that had died of starvation.

According to arrest reports, John Maeshack, 63, of the 200 block of Maeshack Road in Haughton was arrested after deputies were called out two days in a row to his residence in response to loose cattle. The second day the officers also notified a Bossier Parish Livestock Agent who arrived to find nine cows running loose.

According to reports, Maeshack told the officers that the cattle belonged to him and accused them of letting the cows out of their pen.

When the officer tried to issue Maeshack a summons, he refused to cooperated and tried to walk away.

According to Ed Baswell, public information officer with the Bossier Parish Sheriffs Office, four dead cows were found on Maeshacks property. Baswell confirmed reports that the cattle had obviously died from starvation. Baswell said there were also several horses on the property with signs of malnourishment as well.

Baswell said Maeshack claimed that the animals had been being tended to and denied claims of any cruelty them.

Hay was found in a locked storage area on the property, Baswell said. It could be that he lives out of town or goes out of town a lot and has someone else taking care of the animals and whoever he had, had not been taking care of them.

Maeshack faces charges of cruelty to animals, loose livestock and resisting an officer.
