On February 8 officials found a dead dog abandoned in the United Memorial Gardens cemetery. The dog was frozen to the floor of its doghouse, which had been dumped in the cemetery.

The Humane Society of Huron Valley has recently investigated numerous reports of dogs being left outdoors in dangerously low temperatures.

"These animals are suffering," said Julie Curtis, an animal cruelty investigator for the Humane Society. "The community needs to know we are not going to tolerate this."

Although the Humane Society discourages anyone from leaving animals out in the frigid weather, by law, a dog left outdoors in the cold must have a doghouse with insulation and bedding, and plenty of food and water.

"Think of treating them like a living creature," said Curtis.

No one has been prosecuted at this time; however, the case remains under investigation.

Anyone with information regarding the dog found in the cemetery is encouraged to contact Officer Curtis at 734/662-5585.
