A dog that appeared to have been left out in the cold without food or water was turned in to Ohio authorities last week, according to a Michigan State Police report.
In the report, a trooper said he was dispatched at 6 p.m. Feb. 13 to a residence on North County Line Highway where he found a male, pit bull mix dog outside in snowy, windy, 5-degree weather. He said the dog house did not have bedding in it, the dog's bowl was empty, and the dog appeared to be malnourished and suffering from frostbite and an eye infection.
The homeowner, 50, told the trooper the dog belongs to his son, a 24-year-old New Boston man who left the dog there when he moved in with a girlfriend. The father said his son comes over once a week to care for the dog. The owner said he feeds the dog table scraps. While talking to the father, the trooper noticed an unopened bag of dog food in the kitchen.
After the trooper explained the situation to the father, he agreed to let an animal control officer pick up the dog the next morning, which was the soonest an animal control officer was available. In the meantime, he fed the dog and let him stay in his house.
The trooper then called the dog's owner, who said the dog had been given to him by an ex-girlfriend. He told the trooper he thought his father was taking care of the dog.
The next day, animal control was unable to pick up the dog because it was locked in the house, police said. The trooper called the father, who said he had found someone to take the dog.
On Friday, Feb 16, the trooper received a call from a Lucas County animal control officer who said the dog had been brought to him by a man who was later identified as the dog's owner's ex-girlfriend's current boyfriend.
The report has been submitted to the Lenawee County Prosecutor's Office for review for possible animal cruelty charges. References« MI State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Lenawee County, MI
