Guy William Smith of Likely, BC, faces animal cruelty charges under both the Criminal Code of Canada and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, following a BC SPCA investigation in which 30 Husky-Malamute dogs were seized from his property in various states of distress. The dogs were taken into BC SPCA custody on September 28th, 2006 after Smith failed to follow orders issued by BC SPCA special constables to relieve the suffering of the animals.
Marcie Moriarty, General Manager of Cruelty Investigations for the BC SPCA, says the dogs were tethered to the ground, emaciated, infested with internal parasites and living without adequate shelter or access to food or water when BC SPCA cruelty officers executed a warrant on the property. "Many of the dogs were so malnourished and had such serious damage to their immune systems that they had to be fed tiny amounts of food several times a day to ensure that their digestive systems would not be overloaded." They have been receiving on-going veterinary and nutritional care while in BC SPCA custody and are now being adopted into new, loving homes.
"Many people are unaware of the hundreds of hours that go into helping neglected and abused animals overcome not only their physical problems, but the psychological distress that they suffer when they are mistreated," says Moriarty. "Individualized rehabilitation programs were provided for each of the dogs over a period of months and we are now in the process of placing them in the kind of homes that they deserve." The dogs have been cared for at BC SPCA shelters in Prince George, Vernon and Kelowna.
Guy Smith makes his first court appearance on February 28th in Williams Lake. He faces two counts under the Criminal Code of Canada and one count pursuant to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. If convicted he faces a fine of up to $2,000, up to six months in jail and a prohibition on owning animals for a length of time determined by a judge.
