County: Passaic

Disposition: Alleged

Abuser names unreleased

Case Updates: 2 update(s) available

Two men approached a man walking his 5-year-old Cocker Spaniel in Clifton around 9 p.m., held him up at gunpoint, and demanded the dog. It happened on Fairmount Avenue.

The owner pleaded for the animal's safety and even offered money, but the assailants wanted the dog. The canine was taken by one of the men and given to the other, and both men then sped away in a car. Because of the darkness the owner was unable to get the license plate number of the car.

The dog, named "Scoop," is a rust and white colored, neutered male cocker spaniel. He was wearing a red and green collar at the time that said, "Spoiled Rotten" on it.

The family is offering a $500 reward for the return of their pet. The Associated Humane Society of Newark is matching that reward to total $1,000.

Anyone with information can call the Clifton Police Department at 973-470-5908 or 973-476-6971, or the Associated Humane Society of Newark at 973-824-7080.

Case Updates

Police in Clifton have arrested a man Wednesday. The 17-year-old is in custody, and according to Sandberg told police his Mom's dog died and he'd wanted to replace it. No word yet on the accomplice, Sandberg said.

Five-year-old Scoop was returned to Vicky and Joe Castronovo by police.

"He's been through hell, I don't even want to think about it," Joe Castronovo told The New York Post.

The Associated Humane Societies of Newark said Castronovo was out walking his cocker spaniel on Fairmount Avenue Feb. 10 at 9 p.m. when he was approached by two men in a car. One pulled a gun on him and demanded his dog. Castronovo tried to offer the man money, but the attackers wanted the dog. They took scoop and sped away.

Clifton police said the pooch had been passed from person to person, and told the New York Post the last person to have the dog called police.

Police said the pair of assailants is involved in a case of serial dognapping, and that another attempt took place Friday night at gunpoint on a 14-year-old boy in nearby Paterson, N.J. In that attempt, detectives told the Post, the boy begged them not to take his grandmother's dog and instead gave them his iPod.

The men were described as two Hispanic men in dark clothing who drove a dark green, two-door car, police told the Post. Vicky Castronovo had previously added to 1010 WINS' Steve Kastenbaum that the men were wearing bandanas on their faces and it was too dark for her husband to make out the license place numbers.

Vicky Castronovo runs a rescue for cocker spaniels and works closely with the Associated Humane Societies.
