Charges are pending against a couple who allegedly dumped an 8-month-old Chihuahua in a trash bin at an apartment complex in the 5000 block of Valley East Boulevard.

At approximately 3 p.m. on Feb 12, Arcata police responded to the apartment complex, where the female puppy had been placed inside a handbag that was then placed inside a plastic garbage bag, an APD news release stated.

The officers transported the Chihuahua to the Sunny Brae Animal Clinic, where it was examined and reported to be a bit shaken but in decent condition, the release stated.

A search of the dumpster resulted in the officers finding breeder papers for the Chihuahua and, upon contacting the breeder, the identity of the owner was quickly determined to be nearby residents, the release stated.

Officers made contact with the pet owner and her husband. Because the owner has not been arrested, her name is not being released at this time.

The case is currently under review by the Humboldt County District Attorneys Office.

The dog is being returned to the breeder.
