Officers were called to a home in the area of West Shore Park on Feb 6 morning for six abandoned kittens.

Police Chief Donald W. Briggs Jr. said a cleaning crew prepping the home for sale discovered the kittens. The home's heat was turned off and it was only 10 degrees inside. Briggs said that the homeowners placed antifreeze in the toilet bowls so the water wouldn't freeze.

"The kittens had hypothermia and starvation of food and water," he said. "They were drinking the toilet water so they would survive and eating styrofoam cups and children's beads from a necklace."

The kittens were rushed to the Kingston/Plaistow Animal Hospital.

Briggs said the case is under investigation by the Kingston Police Department and the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Briggs said information provided to police indicates the home was abandoned for at least two weeks.

"It's my belief that the individual involved in this unfortunate situation fell upon hard times; however, pet owners have both a legal and moral responsibility to protect and care for their pets," Briggs said.

He said an arrest is likely.
