Puppy left without vet care after hit by car Salinas, CA (US)Incident Date: Friday, Feb 2, 2007 County: Monterey

A severely injured dog who was hit by a car in Salinas more than two weeks ago finally received medical treatment on Feb 7 for serious injuries that remained unreported by the dog's previous owner until early this week.
A concerned citizen brought the dog's situation to the attention of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Officer Rosanna Leighton this week, the SPCA announced.
Officer Leighton discovered the dog, which was unable to walk, in the yard of a Salinas residence on Thursday, the SPCA reported. A car had hit Sophie, a 7-month-old mutt, approximately a week earlier, but her owner failed to make any effort to find veterinary help for her.
Sophie's surgery was paid for by the Monterey SPCA's "Paws to Recycle" program, which uses money raised from recycled aluminum cans to help pay for treatment for injured canines, SPCA spokeswoman Beth Brookhauser said.
Despite having a severely fractured and separated hip -- and possibly a broken knee -- Sophie reportedly persevered through what was likely a life-saving treatment, Brookhauser said.
The Monterey SPCA encourages people to set up recycling events with schools, community groups and families to raise money to help fund the Paws to Recycle program.
"If an animal is injured but the owner is unable to pay for care, please bring the animals in, don't let them suffer," Brookhauser said. "We won't judge you."
Once Sophie is healthy she will be put up for adoption, Brookhauser said.
